Yes of course! We will unfortunately have to wash our collars sometimes as no matter how well behaved your pups are, they will eventually end up getting dirty! But as we all know, a dirty dog is a happy dog! So it’s best to let them enjoy themselves and clean up after.
Washing your dogs collar even if not visibly dirty is a great way of freshening them up, fabric based collars will absorb all kinds of dirt and odour over time much like our clothes.
Every dog collar is different so we’ve outlined some steps below to keep your pup feeling fresh without comprising the look or functionality of the collar.
Stainless Steel Dog Collars
Stainless Steel collars require very little aftercare as they are not porous like other materials. If the steel is plated we highly recommend that you only wash the collar in warm water then thoroughly dry the collar with a clean towel and you are done!
If the collar is just solid stainless steel you can add some washing up liquid for that extra sparkle!
Synthetic Dog Collars (Nylon and Polyester)
Start by adding a few drops of washing up liquid or dog shampoo into warm water. Place the collar into the water to soak for 15-20 minutes. After the soak lightly scrub the collar to remove stubborn grime. Once finished you’ll just need to rinse with warm water and then leave to dry.
Leather Dog Collars
Leather dog collars can be quite delicate despite their rugged appearance. You need to avoid from soaking any leather collars in water or chemicals.
The best way to to safely clean the collar is to wet a cloth with a small amount of dog shampoo or baby shampoo then gently rub th collar. After washing, pat dry using a soft towel to soak excess water. Then you’ll just need to hang to dry. Do not tumble dry or leave in sunlight as this will most likely cause the leather to crack.
Remember, it’s always best to start slowly when cleaning and increase the shampoo and elbow grease accordingly. You’ll find a warm soak will remove a lot more than you realise.
